How the pre-filled message works
The message travels inside the link as a text parameter, so WhatsApp opens the conversation with those exact words waiting in the input box.
Nothing is sent automatically — the person still chooses to press send, and they can edit the text first. That is by design, and it is why the feature does not count as unsolicited messaging.
Because the text is part of the link, changing it means generating a new link. That is less of a limitation than it sounds: one link per channel with a slightly different message is how you find out where your conversations are coming from.
What to write so people actually send it
Write the message from the customer's side, in one short sentence that states what they want rather than what you sell.
"Hi! I'd like a quote for a kitchen renovation" works because the customer would have had to type it anyway. "Hello, I am contacting FlyB regarding your services" fails because it reads like a form, and people delete it before sending.
Keep it to a single line. Anything longer looks like a script the person is being asked to perform, and the friction you removed by pre-filling comes straight back.
Using the message to track where leads come from
Give each placement its own wording — a word or an emoji is enough — and the first message tells you which channel produced the conversation.
WhatsApp gives you no analytics and no referrer, so this is genuinely the only attribution available on the platform. A link in the Instagram bio that opens with "Hi! I came from Instagram" makes the source obvious to whoever answers.
Keep the variants readable and natural. A visible tracking code in the message tells the customer they are being processed, which costs more trust than the data is worth.
