How a wa.me link is built
It is wa.me followed by the phone number in full international format — country code first, with no plus sign, spaces, dashes or brackets.
A US number like (415) 555-0132 becomes 14155550132; a Brazilian number like (98) 91749-6667 becomes 5598917496667. The country code is required even when you expect only local traffic, because the link carries no other clue about where the number lives.
This is where hand-built links usually go wrong. Leaving the country code off, keeping a leading zero from the national format, or leaving punctuation in produces a link that opens WhatsApp and then reports an invalid number. The generator on this page formats it for you from the country selector.

Both are official WhatsApp formats that do the same thing, and wa.me is simply the shorter one.
Shorter matters more than it looks. Fewer characters means a lower-density QR Code, which scans faster and from further away — the reason this tool builds the wa.me form.
You may still see the longer format in older documentation and in links generated years ago. There is no need to migrate anything: existing links keep working.
What a wa.me link cannot do
It cannot send a message on its own, reach a number that is not registered on WhatsApp, or tell you who clicked it.
The link opens a conversation and pre-fills text; the person still presses send. If the number is not on WhatsApp, the app opens and reports that it cannot find the account — worth testing before anything goes to print.
There is also no analytics layer of any kind, and no referrer is passed through. Varying the pre-filled message per placement is the practical workaround, and for most businesses it is enough.
